I needed to save money to achieve my financial goals. I decided to set myself a challenge and I quit buying new clothes for a year, this is what I learned.

  1. Closing credit card accounts could hurt your credit score if your cards have long credit history. I wouldn’t close them, the store may close them due to inactivity and may still hurt your credit score. If a person CS is good like over 700 then no worries.

    1. I can’t speak to this in depth as we have a different credit reporting system here in Australia. I would, however, say that if you can’t control your credit card spending and you end up in an out of control financial situation, then that could hurt your credit a lot more (not paying bills on time etc). It’s important to know your own limitations and to find ways to manage your credit score in a way that works for you.

  2. I think this overall has a lot of good points! If you’re getting out of debt using the Dave Ramsey baby steps then it doesn’t matter if your credit sinks because you aren’t using credit for your financial decisions and instead using cash for your purchases. Using cash makes the exchange of money more “real” and you naturally end up spending less. I do have a question though, why did you have to buy a new dress for your brother’s wedding? Judging by what you said in the beginning of the article about the amount of clothes you have, you didn’t have anything that would work already? Not judging, just curious.

    1. Hi Tiffany – thanks so much for your thoughtful comment. I’ve never liked using cash and carrying cash around, instead, we use our debit cards for our account and use an accounting software that allows me to categorise what we have spent money on. Knowing I’ll have to categorise an expense makes me think twice before buying frivolously and has the same effect for me in naturally spending less money. As for the new dress – I was still breastfeeding and didn’t have anything that fit or that was breastfeeding friendly. 🙂

  3. I just wanted to let you know you are not alone. You described me to a tee and I have to be very careful not to allow myself
to slip into that mindset. And it’s not just clothes, I can justify buying anything I want if I want it. So I really watch my purse strings! Thanks for your tips on how you handled it and congratulations on meeting your goals. Mine finally came down to staying away from the stores! Boring, but it works, try the library, it’s free.

  4. It is now August 2022 and I just first came across your very thoughtful essay and admirable 2019 goal. Congratulations on your success! I hope that you have been able to maintain all that you learned. I am at the beginning of this journey, and it is complicated by the fact that I have a part-time job at a leading mid-price women’s clothing store. Lots of exposure to ever-changing fashion. However, after getting rid of countless amounts of clothing since COVID, many with price tags still attached or only worn once, my buying-habits needed to change. I have been “shopping my closet” and checking Pinterest posts for how others style items that I already own. It’s working! If there is something I may want to buy that can’t be worn with at least three other items that I already own I don’t buy it no matter how great of a “deal” it seems to be at the time. Was my good fortune to find your post!

  5. You are not alone on this journey. My mother liked to shop, so I did too. When I went to work part time I justified shopping. However I have stuff that I see me wearing in family pictures of our growing family. The youngest is now 39! I do like to look at Pinterest and see how I can modify stuff I have. I was so excited this fall to wear a burnt orange blouse with a black jacket, a grey vest, and a natural linen colored jacket. I watch what the actors are wearing on the tv shows I watch, and see combinations of outfits that I can do.I have given bags of clothes to charity shops. I am pretty handy with a sewing machine, knitting needles and a needle and thread. Sometimes my revamps work and sometimes they don’t.

  6. What a great article. Abd a great challenge. It really is about changing your mindset. I am going to explore that a bit more. And complete the challenge too. Frankly it is so fatiguing making ‘what to wear’ decisions every day. Thank you.

  7. I have a similar problem and it’s my New Year’s resolution to stop shopping on line. I am bad about justfying stuff because it’s on sale. So another tip is to unsubscribe from all the retailers that send you emails, always promoting a sale. I’d buy stuff I didn’t need because it was on sale.
