17 Real Uses For Coconut Oil
Have you jumped on the Coconut Oil bandwagon yet? Perhaps you want to but you’re not quite sure how to use the delicious smelling oil? Well you are in luck!! There are hundreds of ways to use it and here are 17 of my absolute favourite real uses for coconut oil!!
1 – To cook at high heat.
There has been a big change of mindset when it comes to cooking and cooking oils. What we previously thought was ‘healthy’ is no longer and we have been told that some oils even change their composition when exposed to high heats. Coconut oil is not one of them, it has a high smoke point meaning it can be heated to much higher temperatures and it has a mild flavour meaning it doesn’t change the taste of your food. Winning!!
2 – Bulletproof coffee.
Have you ever had a bulletproof? If you haven’t you are in for a real treat. Delicious and creamy – plus a massive energy boost.
3 – Facial Scrub.
I use coconut oil teamed with sugar and honey to make the best facial scrub. It leaves my skin so silky, smooth and hydrated. I’ve even started using it as a whole body scrub. Love it.
4 – Nipple Moisturiser (for breastfeeding Mumma’s).
This is possibly my absolute favourite use! I had to exclusively pump breastmilk for my son when he was in NICU and coconut oil was a lifesaver. Its antibacterial and antifungal properties mean that it has no negative impact on your milk and is fine for your baby to ingest if you are actually breastfeeding. Seriously amazing.
5 – Leave in Conditioner.
After all the stress we put on our hair, I use coconut oil as a deep conditioning treatment on my hair, leave it in overnight and wash it out the next morning. I also add just a small amount to the ends after straightening it to replace some of the moisture I’ve just sizzled out of my hair.
6 – Lip Balm.
During the cooler months I always end up with horribly dry and cracked lips. I keep some coconut oil in a small leak proof container in my handbag to use as lip balm throughout the day as well as a block for windburn.
7 – Oil Pulling.
Okay, I don’t do this… but my hubby does and swears by it. I really should try it. Put a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and swish around for 15 minutes. If you need convincing (like I do) check out this article.
8 – Add to your green juice.
We all know there are massive health benefits to coconut oil so to make sure I’m getting enough, I add a tablespoon to my green juice when I’m blending it. It adds a very subtle coconut flavour and it’s delicious.
9 – A foot moisturiser.
As we know, coconut oil has antifungal and antibacterial properties and therefore can help fight foot fungus and reduce smelly feet.
10 – A natural deodorant.
I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re heading to the gym or know you’re going to be sweating it out but it is a fantastic in-between deodorant substitute.
11 – As a butter replacement.
Brilliant for those who can’t have dairy and just delicious for the rest of us. Can easily be used on your sandwiches too! Yum!
12 – Stretch mark prevention.
As if avoiding stretch marks wasn’t bonus enough, rubbing coconut oil on your big, round pregnant belly feels awesome.
13 – Shaving oil.
For him and her – coconut oil adds moisture and makes shaving a breeze.
14 – Promote wound healing. Another antibacterial and antifungal use of coconut oil… apply to wounds or insect bites to help promote faster healing.
15 – Make-up remover.
I have never found a makeup remover that works better than coconut oil. Plus it’s completely natural without any dodgy ingredients, so fantastic for your skin!!
16 – To help soothe nappy rash.
Coconut oil can be applied on its own or used under a barrier cream to help soothe and promote faster healing of nappy rash.
17 – To oil wooden chopping boards.
Have you ever noticed your wooden chopping boards starting to dull? Rub some coconut oil into them to restore their natural beauty as well as benefitting from the antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Quick tip- a tablespoon in the bath is great for kids skin… especially when they scream blue murder if you try to put any kind of cream on their eczema!
That’s a fantastic idea. It’s coming into the cooler months here and my son’s skin always dries out. I’ll be trying this for sure. Thank you. xo
